What is Vagina Steaming and Should You Consider It

Feeling exhausted, stressed or bloated? Suffering from killer cramps or giving 1,000 f**ks to the world for no apparent reason except that the sun is shining? If you and your uterus checked one or all (bless your heart) of the above, you may be the perfect candidate for vagina steaming. I know, it sounds crazy, but stay with me.

Also known as “yoni steaming” (“yoni” is the Sanskrit word for womb or vagina), vaginal steaming is a centuries-old tradition where women sit over a pot of scolding hot water mixed with herbs to cleanse and revitalize the uterus. Think of it as a spring-cleaning of sorts for your vag.

The average vagina steaming session promises to reduce stress, fight infections, regulate your period, ease cramps, increase fertility, treat uterine fibroids and yeast infections while making you an overall happier and more awesome person.

So what does steam slithering directly into your most precious crevice entail? And more importantly, how does it feel? Well, Tamera Mowry once described her first V-steaming session as feeling “like you’re taking a dump outside in Louisiana.” It’s not as bad as it sounds, promise. Fast Company writer Laura Hooper Beck recounts her first vagina steaming experience as an unsettling pleasure/pain combo turned euphoria type of feeling.

Entering the vagina steaming room (I just don’t know what else to call it), I’m faced with what looks like a Victorian police cell toilet situated over a steaming pot of Grandma’s Chai Spice Vagina tea…I cannot tell a lie: At first, it feels incredibly weird to have hot wet air wafting into my cooch. My entire body tenses as I actively clench my vaginal muscles to protect myself from the invading shower of scorching steam. It would feel exactly like the poison fog from the Hunger Games arena, I think. First a burning heat and then convulsion after convulsion of electric pain!

…It feels foreign, but not bad; like visiting a new country that you weren’t sure would be safe for women travelers and then stumbling upon a lesbian bookstore collective. And you know what? I like it. I zen out as my vagina sucks up steam and drips out whatever; I fantasize about getting a really good spa-style exfoliating scrub beatdown afterwards. I want to feel as clean on the outside as I feel on the inside. Which is to say, very clean. Squeaky clean. Just me and my squeaky clean vagina. At the end of my 30 minutes, I stand up and have a distinct feeling of emptiness. Not in a scary way but in a calming way. I feel good.

So what makes this ancient practice such an ideal pastime for the modern woman? According to medical experts, because the tissues of the vagina are incredibly absorbent and contain a large amount of small pores, the warmth of the steam works to soften and open them. Combine this with the herbs, many of which contain antibiotics and body-friendly benefits, are released and carried to the surface of your skin, and inside of the vagina, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream, ultimately making you a much more pleasant lady.

Because much of America is still becoming hip to the practice of vagina steaming, there aren’t many spas that offer the treatment. But like all good things, there is a DIY method.

Simply add your dry herbs in a basin of hot water, remove your clothing from the waist down, find a quiet place to vibe out and enjoy the ride for about 20 – 40 minutes. And don’t forget the most important rule, make sure the water isn’t too hot, to avoid burns. Stay wrapped in warm blankets as you sit so you don’t release the steam.

Once the time has passed, remain wrapped in blankets and snuggle underneath the covers for the night. The herbs will continue to work on your reproductive system as you sleep. If you’re like the countless other women who use the vaginal steam, you’ll notice reduced cramping, lessened bloating, and more energy at the onset of your next period. #Winning

There are some medical experts who have their doubts about the healing wonders of V-steaming, but the Yelp reviews don’t lie. Many women claim the treatment has done wonders for their periods, helped with weight loss and even amped up their sex life.

So, for the good of uteruses everywhere, drop your pants, open your legs and let the good steam roll.
